BS2 SX + PCF8574 + Stepper

hi,
my BS 2SX is connected to 6 PCF8574 and each PCF8574 is connected to 2 stepper motors. They work fine but I've got problem concerning the power supply.
each of my steppers need 5-12V and I've connected a AC-->DC (12V, 400mA) power supply.
I've tried to connect 1 power supply to 2 steppers, at the beginning, it works well but after 1/2 hour, the power supply blows but others are fine.
My question is what kind of power supply I'll need to minimise the no. of plug, means can I just connect 1 power supply to 12 steppers? if yes, how many V and mA is that power supply?

·· Without knowing the specs for the Stepper Motors that would be difficult at best to guess.· How much current does each Stepper Motor draw?
