keyboard encoder

ok the keyboard encoder has alot of pins on itself and has wires from these connections connected to buttons so when the button is pressed it shorts those two certain pins together on the keyboard encoder. (incase any one didn't know) now i can hook my Keyboard encoder wires up to one button that came with the boe bot kit and it sends out the letter when i press the button. then when I try putting both wires straight to an I/O pins of their own, and turning both HIGH at the same time it will still make a connection and send out its designated letter even when the boe bot is turned off. My question is how can I use the basic stamp to controll shorting these two wires together electronically only when I want it to. I have the code taken care of, I only need to know how to wire the encoder to the breadboard so it can only make connections when I want to. I did have resistors hooked up to the wires up to 4700 OHMs and it still shorted the two wires together all the time..
any help will be appreciated and I am very open minded to suggestions..
