BOE USB driver installation problem

I have problem installing the VCP USB driver from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/FT232-FT245Drivers.htm#VCP. I'm running on a laptop with WinXP. The system detects the BOE and it·is located among the·USB devices but as an unidentified unit (Device Manager window). When I look on the properties for the device·I can see that any drivers have been installed by the system. I then tried to update the driver with the VCP driver but I get the message that the system did not find better driver at the specified location.
I then tried to direct·it directly to the folder with the driver. But then I got the message that·any machine information could be found in the FTID directory. This is strange since 3 different inf files are present·at the specified·location.
I tried to remove the device by using remove in the driver tab for the device. However, next time I connect the BOE it appears again as an unknown USB device in the device manager.
Please help...
