Composite Materials for Milling Machine Gantries
My specialty is composite materials, which have the benefit of high stiffness and strength, low density and CTE, and excellent resistance to corrosion and fatigue.
I am interested in potential application of composites in machine parts like milling machine gantries. Benefits would be weight and thermal distortion reduction and higher stiffness.
The cost of carbon fibers has come way down, and they are now cheap enough to reinforce concrete structures that have degraded in service. They are also widely used in paper and plastic film rollers.
Does anyone have an idea of what a large milling machine gantry weighs?
Do you think the idea of using composites in gantries and other moving parts has merit?
