basic stamp powering solenoid

would a 74hc595 shift register that is connected to a basic stamp be able to operate a solenoid that would able to keep a paperclip intact?

    Hello,

·· Most likely not.· Without information on the Solenoid it's really a difficult question to answer, but generally speaking solenoids require more current (And sometimes voltage) than the 74HC595 can handle without a transistor or other driver.

Hmm. "Paperclip intact" -- I thought paper clips stayed intact by themselves -- personally I've never seen one spontaneously blow apart.

But seriously, you'll probably need a Darlington Array IC to provide enough current if you want a solenoid that can "pick-up" a paper clip. Make sure you put a diode, reverse biased, across the coil to provide somewhere for the field collapse current to go.
