www.sparkfun.com search: gps

They sell 6 versions of SMA antennas, most are tri-band (GPS + 2 Cellular bands) but the cheapest is $13 with the cheapest active antenna being $20.

PS search "tri-band" to pull up thier tri-band antennas.

Several people have emailed me and are having problems making the Nuts'N'Volts article #83 work with this receiver. After re-reading this article there are some differences between the two receivers.

I have made some minor modification to Jon's SIMPLE_GPS.BSP that is attached.

1. The Axiom receiver adds '.999' to the time field for 1000ths of seconds, which shifts the data down to different fields.

2. SIMPLE_GPS.BSP uses a Garmin custom sentence $PGRMZ which is not supported by the Axiom, if altitude is desired then the $GPGGA sentence contains the altitude field, I will try to find the time to add this to the program.

Attached is a screen shot of the receivers output of the debug window and a modified version of Jon's SIMPLE_GPS.BSP renamed to AXIOM_SIMPLE_GPS.BSP

I use a separate power supply, because I'm using my test fixture for the GPS module. The receiver and active GPS antenna can pull up to 180ma, so make sure that your BOE can supply that much current. If your running off of batteries that might be the problem.

Here's a shot of my setup, It's been running the code posted above for months.

www.allsurplus.net/Axiom/apps/GPS_BS2P24.jpg (warning this photo is about 1mb in size)

1. Using a separate power supply to power the receiver

2. Not using a BOE board but a Super Carrier Board, should be very similar

3. Stamp is a BS2P24

I have a GPS signal repeater, that's why I can have a GPS lock inside my shop, with the GPS antenna sitting on the shop bench, normally the GPS antenna should be placed outside so it can "see" the sky.

I am planning on buying GPS modules from allsurplus. Can anyone share some basic stamp BS2 connections information that is specific to the Axiom sandpiper module.·I have been reading most ot the many articles about connecting and
It looks pretty straightforward. I am a little puzzled about how to connect the BS2 to the module (GPS Axiom sandpiper) in DGPS mode, is it as simple as moving that stamp input to port B of· the Axion GPS module?·
Thanks..............

On the Sandpiper, Port B is the DGPS input port, this in an input from a user supplied DGPS receiver.

Take a look at the links above for the Nuts & Volts article and program code.

While it is possible to use these with a BS2, all depends on your programming skills and techniques. They would probably be easier to work with on the BS24p or other models of stamps that have 'scratch pad memory'. Remember your dealing with variable length strings when interpreting the NMEA data.

Search the forums, or look in the files section of the old YAHOO group, there is an example program on how to extract time, from the receiver, using the BS2.

Thanks Mike, I'll read Jon's articles on GPS and the stamp. I am still confused about DGPS. Based on what I have read so far, DGPS receivers are accurate within 1 to 15 feet while GPS receivers are accurate to about 50 feet. What purpose is the reference to a DGPS· port (serial receive data. differential GPS messages) on the Axiom sandpiper module? I will visit there web site to see if I can find an answer but a quick look did not turn up anything.

By connecting the output of a DGPS receiver to the Sandpiper module, the receivers accuracy will increase to 1 to 5 meters.

For more info in DGPS take a look at Trimble's site:

FYI:

Found some Active GPS Antennas in the surplus market:

http://www.halted.com/commerce/catalog/product.jsp?product_id=20182&czuid=1136325569296

Looks like it has an 'odd ball' RF connector, but at this price it seems like a deal to me!

Thanks Mike I'll take a look. The Trimble site you suggested answered my questions about DGPS.

I still find it amazing that module costs for DGPS are so high. they are completly out of my price range. I will stick with

GPS modules and the accuracy they provide.

Yes DGPS receivers are pricey but there is also this alternative:

http://www.wsrcc.com/wolfgang/gps/dgps-ip.html

My company's use of GPS technology is limited to the AVL industry, so we normally know what the item is we are looking for. The GPS information narrows down the location of the item we are looking for, so it can be recovered in a timely manor.
