Wire question

I need stranded #24 AWG wire (for a male to male db9 gender changer
cable, that I'm making.) I got (from Radio Shack) 2-conductor (I don't know how
many "conductors" I need.), 24-gauge, stranded,
speaker wire (Radio Shack part # 278-1301) I don't know much about
wire yet, so I don't know if it would work or not. I haven't opened the
package yet, so I can return it, if need be. Thanks! idea.gif

Even though it will probably be cheaper to purchase a male-male gender changer at the local electronics place ( use the miniature kind that are no bigger than two DB-9's back to back), you'll still need wire for the other parts of your projects.
You can buy single strand from a place like Digi-Key by the spool in multiple colours. Or, go to your local burglar/fire alarm installer and buy (actually, he'll probably give you 8 or 10 feet just for coming through his door) a few feet of multiconductor stranded wire from him. A very popular size has 9 conductors plus a bare ground. Each conductor is a different colour. When individual strands are required, they can be easily pulled right out of the outer casing (up to six or eight feet, anyhow ) for use as hook up wire.
When you need small amounts of solid wire, buying a few feet of CAT 5 or CAT 6 Ethernet cable (the blue stuff connected to computer network cards) and strip out the pairs as required.

    Cheers,
    Tom Sisk

So will what I bought work? (I bought stranded, 2-conductor, 24 gauge speaker wire...the instructions call for stranded #24 AWG wire.) sad.gif

The wire you bought will work - but you'll have to be very careful when connecting the wires since they're all the same color. A better idea is to use 4 or 6 conductor phone wire (24 gauge solid). Radio Shack sells a 50 foot spool of 4 conductor phone wire for $7

    Quick note about Cat5 cable...

This comes in two different types, 'multistrand' with an RJ45 plug in each end, to connect your PC to a wall-socket, and
the 'single strand' type used 'in the wall' from that wall socket and to the main Hub/Switch.
(The 'single strand' is cheaper to manufacture, but doesn't take well to bending... )

    Also, Cat5 isn't necessarily blue.
    (It's most commonly gray)
Cat6, though, or is it Cat5e, is blue.
(Well, the single-strand cables I've seen are blue.)

Industrial supply store for wire. Any and every kind of wire you can imagine. I'd request a catalog, they are easier to use than the website.

Cool...I went there and requested a printed catalog. (They ARE easier to use than a site...most of the time anyway!) Thanks for the site URL! smile.gif
