I know that Garmin provides a cable for serial connection to their eTrex, but what if you don't have it. How do you connect to such an odd connector?

you have a couple options.....crack open the case and solder direct to the wires....
Or carefully tack a couple wires to the pads themselves (I've done this to no bad effects).

Yes, Garmin charges a lot for their serial cables. Here's some info on how to make your own plug - or you can buy the ePlug (link also on this page) www.nomad.ee/micros/etrex.shtml

Thanks for the information. I had been afraid to solder them, but if it is safe, I will go for it.

Spaine...it's as safe as you are careful!

It's just a metal contact...however, it is surrounded by plastic...leave the heat too long and your contact might get the plastic all gooey and fall out.
    Just tack it on.

AS far as removing it afterwards....mine came off pretty easily...just touched my iron to it and it blobbed off!
