Want to make a Sumo-Bot confused about BASIC STAMP 2

Hi,
I am new to this robot thing.... but I have been into electronics for some time now.. and have designed and built a few PCB boards along the way.
But I am stumped this time !
I want to make a Mini-Sumo Bot so I thought I would buy a micro controller and then just design my own PCB board.... but I am confused at the difference between the http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=27291 and this http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=BS2-IC ?
can any one help me out here? I am not sure witch one I want.... are they the same thing?... I noticed the through-hole version has a Serial port built in?
also when building a sumo bot would I have to buy other components for my board? like a motor controller?

I think I am just going to use cheapo servo's for the drive system... I am just going to use it to compete against a friend .. I don't know if I will ever use it in a compitition.

I confused about wich one to use the BS2-OEM or just the BS2-Chip now I know I can build it with the OEM through-hole version.

I need a parts list ( save on shipping by ordering it all at once) so if you guys could help me that would be great.
So far I have:
BS2-OEM board.
(2) QTI Sensors ( I think thoughs are the ones I should use )
Battery holder
Serial Cable
(2) Continuous Rotation Servos
Any thing else?

2. The sumo needs sensors for the edge of the circle (which may be the QTI that you are talking about), but the photo resistors will work just fine:

3. The sumo needs ensors for "seeking" the other sumo and the IR stuff works pretty good for that:

It is hard to beat the price of the BOE-BOT from Radio Shack to get all of this stuff. You may also want to wait for the next sale on the Parallax EBAY page. The BOE-BOT was recently listed with a "BUY-NOW" for $99.
the QTI sensors that I was talking about are just what I saw on this website http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=555-27401 and it said they are made for detecting the white line for sumo bots.... but photo resistors are cheaper and if they do the same thing I will just go with them.
So when are they going to have there next ebay auction ? or do we just have to watch and wait ?
and also how do I know how long the sale will be on the OEM BS2 kit? or is it one of toughs for ever sales? I don't want to miss it but I am just trying to think off all the parts I need before hand.
I am still a little confused about the BS2.... so there are pin outs and what do I hook up to the pin outs? will they hook directly up to servo's and sensors? or will they hook up to another controller circuit ? I started to read the WAM but it was confuesing me even more [noparse]:)[/noparse]

oh and has any one used an Etch Circuit for there bots? I have a bunch of photo-board that I need to use up so I figured I could make it etched....... if any one has a circuit design let me know [noparse]:)[/noparse]

Here is a schmatic·of·the experimental circuits used in the "Robotics with the Boe-Bot". The book will help you understand exactly how the sensors work and how the BS2 uses them.
The schematic is drawn so that a BS2 OEM is supposed to be plugged into connector 'J1'.
The QTI sensor array will be a very reliable sensor for detecting the edge of the circle. The photo resistors will require you to experiment until you get it working the way you want it.

ok so how many QTI sensors am I going to need? and how many IR transmitters/receivers am I going to need?
here is my list of things to get:
BS2-OEM board
(2) QTI Sensors

( custom made PCB board)
(custom made wheels)
(costom made body)
Download Programming software
One thing I am not sure of are my programming skills [noparse]:)[/noparse] not sure if they are up to snuff or not.

I suppose that you could start out with one of each sensor.
You will have to decide how competative your robot is going to be. Every sensor that you have on a robot and that you can use effectively will make your robot better.
Building a robot is allot like getting an antenna for a radio. I may get a G5RV antenna and find that it does everything I need it to do. The antenna for your radio may need to be a vertical of some sort. You really need to establish some parameters of what you will need the robot to do and then design/spend accordingly.
