I had a similar problem with my Radio Shack knock off controller. What I found was that the pinout is correct as to FUNCTION but the colors do vary apparently widely. If you can reliably determine PIN 1, then the functions follow according to pin number not wire color. If these devices are truly·plug and play, then all of them have to have identical pin to pin functionality.
