I built this using Basic Stamp and VB5. I built a working model, but didn't want to invest the time and resources into building a more refined model (since i had no real reason to).

interesting idea.
maybe its just me, but couldn't you have just used a sign-out sheet instead?
or a barcode on the back of each unit that you could just scan to checkout?
just a thought.· neat project tho.· i was gonna say 'way to think out of the box', but you thought yourself 'into the box.'

The signout sheet only works if people use it. That was the whold problem, people (myself included) would just take them and go. So when the end of the week came an you had to start hunting around for them, because people would hide them at the end of the day to use again tomorrow. This way you HAD to assign your name to the system to get the device, and then return the device to get your name out of the system. It also has text file logging to prevent a reboot that would just erase all the information.
