I bet this could drive someone insane!nono.gif

It's a mini cricket and when it gets dark enough it starts up smilewinkgrin.gif
I built this based on a PDF I found www.wenzel.com/pdffiles/april1st.pdf

I like being annoying tongue.gif

    I built the circuit and have already driven my mom bananas with it.

    There's a surprise... are you sure it was the cricket that did the damage? tongue.gif

    But when they actually do find the circuit (and they will, eventually) it will likely end up in little bits.

    Would you wish that on your precious Stamp?

    (You could also add a photosensor to only beep when the lights are off, making it much harder to find.)

    The attached picture is a schematic of one I build often for friends (I based it off a basic astable multivibrator). It stays quiet for about 4 minutes and then emits a ~1 second beep. I suggest this as an alternative to wasting a basic stamp, as this costs $2 max (plus the cost of the buzzer). Just take care to ensure that the components you choose are rated to handle the voltages you plan to drive the buzzer with. I used 10v caps and 1/4watt resistors. The transistors were just 3904's. I used a 4100Hz buzzer and it was practically impossible to tell which direction the sound came from. Just remember that chances are pretty good it will be found eventually and whoever finds it will not be too happy, so consider these disposable.
    by the way, teachers love them.

    haha i got it in my grandparents room and they are trying to "find it" haha they had me helping them try to find the cricket! i added a 2k ohm resitor to make it very faint as if its somewhere deep in the crevises of the bed, and added a counter with a 10 second delay after it chirps so many times. to make them think its stopping chirping because they are in there... its practically real sounding

    Willthiswork89,

    Can you post a diagram and parts for the timer you added to the Beeper?

    Thanks

    Here's a version I made. It throws in some randomness to the timing and stops chirping for 15 seconds after every 10-15 chirps. It uses the same circuit as the original.

    Joe all i did was do counter var word

    run through the chirp and add 1 to counter
    if(counter = 15) then
    counter = 0
    pause 30000
    endif

    Nice idea!

    Real crickets (the bugs) use temperature to determine their chirp rate (chirps per minute). Add a simple thermistor circuit and then, as the temp goes up, the delay between chirps can go down. This will make it sound more like "the real thing"
