Playstation Controller help

Trying to interface a PSOne controller to a basic stamp. The code from Nuts and Volts seems to be intended to work with a PS2. I have tried it, and it doesn't seem to recognize the controller. Anyone able to lend any help on code or interface?

    Check your connections -- I've used that code many times and I know it works.
