Newbie question about the Board of Education C.

Hi I acquire a full boe bot kid with the board of education c and a serial connector, but then i realise that i will also need to connect the boe bot to my laptop and this one doesn't have a serial port so i buy an adapter from serial to usb and connected to my machine; and when i open the program and select identify it appears the com port and in the columns of Loop back and Echo it says Yes but nothing appears in the columns of Device type and Version and when i try to download some program it says that it didn't find any Basic Stamps. Could you please tell if i'm doing something wrong or if i have to do something else so this can work properly; thanks a lot.

    1. Is the BOE powered? It must be powered to be programmed.

    2. Are you using a 'straight-through' cable, or a null-modem cable?

    3. What was the manufacturer for your USB to Serial adapter, and was it advertised for PDA use? PDA USB adapters typically don't work. Good manufactures include IOGear, KeySpan, BAFO, and FTDI. Bad manufactures include Belkin, though some have worked.
