Link to article on how motherboards are assembled (Gigabyte factory in Taiwan). Fascinating process.

It is amazing to see all the work that goes into one, and yet they only cost ~100.00.

Not amazing when you realize that labor is underpaid in some parts of the world.

The same technology is available in this country - and except for high production volumes (more than 1000 boards) the prices here are pretty competitive. I've seen motherboards sold for as little as $35. Some stores such as Microcenter have motherboard/CPU/fan bundles where the motherboard is free after a mail-in rebate. I still haven't figured out how you can make a profit on something that's free.

I saw a video somewhere of one of those automatic pick and place machines, it was amazing how quickly it worked. It was literally machine gun fast.

FYI the fastest pick and place machines are called chip shooters! I think that name goes well with your machine gun analogy.

The motherboards might only cost $100, but it cost probably $200M to get the first one off of the line smile.gif
