applause meter question

hey there. I'm trying to make a applause meter using a dynamic microphone, preamp, basic stamp and adc8031 chip (8 bit analog to digital) and although I can see the signal from the preamp with my scope, the amplitude of my audio signal is in the +/- 20 mv range, which seems like it's too small to be picked up by the adc. Any advice on debuggin this circuit? do I need to amplify my audio signal more?

I've tested the adc set up with the stamp and it's working.

thanks!!

I would use a condensor microphone. You can get one out of a junk tape recorder. It will have much better pickup and signal strength. Dynamic mics are usually for close-up micing.

If you cannot get your hands on a condenser mic as Bean suggested, an LM386 audio amplifier is another option and is very easy to use.
