Tip: Don't. Solder a socket into the board, then put your component into the package. Use non-tacky blue masking tape to hold the socket into the board until you get it soldered in.

In general, you should use sockets instead of just soldering DIP packed ICs on a board. The heat from a soldering iron can damage the IC and soldering it directly to a board is (relatively) permanent.
