Range of keychain transmitter and receiver

Hi, I am building a alarm system for a Vespa scooter using a BS2 and·the 418 MHz·receiver and keychain transmitter combo. I'm wondering if I can count on at least forty feet of range. The antenna will be enclosed but·hanging free between a steel panel on the front and a plastic panel on the back. I have very little room for a ground plane, maybe 2" by 2" max. Would this small ground plane matter or could I use the steel body of the scooter?

Also, I plan on using the Memsic accelerometer as the trigger. Since I don't want the alarm to go off every time a breeze blows (keep in mind it's a scooter), is the accelerometer going to be·to sensitive?

Any thoughts would be helpful.
