trying to look for a specific sensor, but don't know the name

Hello. What type of sensor would I be looking for if I wanted to detect the passing by of a magnet? This would be similar to those sensors used on bike odometers to measure speed and distance travelled.

Thanks,
Matthew

The type used on every bike computer I have seen is called a reed switch.

There is also a hall effect sensor. Some output an analog voltage with respect to magnetic flux (density of magnetism near sensor).

Some are open collector, that will ground what is connected to the output when the sensor is in the presence of a magnetic field. (requires a pull up resistor for a high output)

Others will output a 'digital' voltage without a pull up resistor.
