Just to break the monotony, I thought we could have a little contest.

Tomorrow, Monday, as near to 12:00 EST as I can make it, I will post a question on this thread.· The first person with the most complete answer will receive a 64Kbyte AT25F512 piggyback EEPROM.

Entries will be judged on accuracy, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

If you would like to post an answer but do not need the EEPROM, plase indicate this in your response.

    OK here's my stab at it: I don't know what modern physicists call it, but when Neils Bohr first described it, he called it nuclear deformation and drew an analogy to splitting a liquid drop and the associated surface tension of the original drop when compared to the smaller drops. In fission the resultant excess of energy is released as beta rays, which later decay to neutrons.

    Did I win?

    Ok that is the original post without any modifications. I removed the prior post to remove the hint I gave to achieving a "more correct" answer. Though in retrospect, I should have just removed the addendum I inserted. Oh well, its too late to go back and fix it.

    Come on people, no one else will venture a guess? I've already indicated that even if I've hit the mark, there is still room to split my arrow. No one has any use for a 64KB flash memory? Criminy, I even showed where I got the info. (Being a professional search artist has its merits, I found the info in less than a minute [noparse]:)[/noparse]

    A neutrino has about 1 millionth the mass of an electron.

    19.27 is atomic mass units -amu - where 1 amu ~= the mass of a hydrogen atom.

    The mass loss should match radiation detected in the form of neutrons released from the split according to the formula E=mc2.

    The difference here seems to be 18.89 and NOT 19.27

    I'm foncused

    E=mc2
    E is in Joules if m is in grams

    m = 18.89 / 6.022*1023 = 3.1368*10-23
    c = 299,792,458 meters per second

    E = 9.4040e-15

    For 1 gram of Pu would be 5.6631 Giga Joules of released Energy ....
    So there! that proves I know absolutely nothing about what I am talking about!

    I should know this but I don't.· I worked in the nuclear industry about 15 years ago.· I even have a patent on a Californium 252 source handling device.· But I forgot nearly everything and I no longer have my reference books.

    So I'll guess.

    I believe the only subatomic products of a nuclear decay that have any appreciable mass are protons, neutrons and alpha particles.··Since there is a net gain of 2 protons in the reaction (Tin has 50, Palladium has 46, Plutonium has 94), I'm guessing that an alpha particle gets thrown in and about 21 neutrons are scattered (assuming the Tin and Palladium are stable isotopes).·

    What do you call it?· I dunno.

    .013699895 is the calculated standstill mass of neutrinos, I triple checked the value. I agree, it seems massive thats why I looked several places.

    that is true (actually I think they can be we just don't·know how to slow them down since they are so small and have no charge)·but physicists have formulas associating the mass of a particle with the velocity of the particle·and can extrapolate what the mass for a stationary particle would be, a stationary particle is orders of magnitude more massive than a particle near the speed of light.
