Homebrew BS2P24+board?

Has anyone here ever built they're own BS2P24 and development board. Since Parallax is selling the BS2P24 Interpreter for $12.50 - seems like you could save a lot of money by designing and building your own version for about 1/2 the cost. How much do you get an hour?!....rhetorical question...but really, even at minimum wage it would take you more than 30hours to design and build one...so you're already over the cost!

Then make an arrangement with Parallax for them to supply you the Interpreter Chip, and you can build a thousand boards with embedded OEM chips.
One thing -- please don't try to put Parallax out of business, we're all very fond of them here. There once was a 'cheaper' BS2 built on this approach -- one of the books uses it for their examples. The only problem was, that vendor went out of business, and that 'cheaper' version is no longer available.
Also, in the world of Microprocessor applications, a $50.00 module is really not that expensive. If you really want to embed a cheap processor in your design, go with straight PIC processors. Startup costs are going to be higher, though.
Oh, and the 24-pin format thing -- you'll STILL have to buy interpreter chips from Parallax, they keep that as company proprietary information.· They're not stupid, you know, they've been doing this since 1991 or so.· I don't know -- there's something right, and something not right with what you are suggesting.
