Monitoring Serial Port

I have a nice Craftsman Multimeter with an RS232 9pin serial port. Unfortunately the software that came with the multimeter, to be installed on a PC, is very primitive, and looks like it was written 10yrs ago. I was unable to find the communication protocol (commands, baudrate, parity, etc...) What is the best way to get that information through testing? Any usefull software besides HyperTerminal?

My meter requires a code to be sent prior to it transmitting, I think R is sent.
It's been a while since I've used that feature.

Try WinHexCom from http://www.aerospacesoftware.com/shareware.html
Run it while you're running the program and it'll monitor your bitstream going/coming from your serial port.
