programming microcontrollers with Python

Hello everyone!
I tend to get the best advice from this board, so I figured I could get some help from all of you. I am looking to branch out from the world of BASIC... Also, I need to find a way to interface with some other Python projects that are occuring around me... Basically, I am looking for a way to control a microcontroller using the Python programming language. I've seen pyMite as well as pyRo (comments and/or horror stories are welcome). Can this be done with a stamp, or an OOPIC, or a gumstix, or something else?
Or perhaps you know of the correct way that I should go about all this. In the end product, I want to have control via a USB or RS-232 that links up with dynamic data created in python. Craziness.
Thanks all.
Mike
