what kind of reed sensor would i need to read a magnet every time it crosses the sensor to meser how far a car(not a full sise car) has gone?

i dont know but i know that my go kart has a magnet on the axle and sometype of pick up with two wires that seses it everytime it passes, then translates that into sometype of signal. that all i can help you with. sorry

What you want is a "hall effect" sensor.
