Stretching the capabilities of the stamp

Let me start with what I"m attempting to do, then what I have done, then my concerns.

I am attempting to intergrate a stamp (be it a 2 or 2e) in to a usefull system in my 2002 Ford Ranger.
So far I have successfully intergrated the stamp to the vehicle power system (with proctection from power spikes), along with two small ultrasonic distance sensors mounted in the front and rear bumpers.
My plans are to have this grow to interface with the OBD computer, and have a backlite LCD screen to display messages. I also have a working temperature & humidity sensor board, that is going to be duplicated and mounted in various places such as the intake duct, and cab.

Problem I'm running to is memory, and production. The parts for the above cost me around $150 so far, I only kept it that low from utilizing tools and small parts from where I work.

Second concern is memory. For others who have used EEPROM memory, which would be the recommend kind and brand ?

Any ideas would be appreciated for the memory, cost or just other cool items to have on the truck. My truck also has some other items that are my own brand of aftermarket such as automatic head light dimmers, a concealed dump bed (From the NH northern magazine, I intergrated in such a way that its impossible to tell the truck has a dump box till I raise the bed). I also installed a small auxillery emergency fuel tank that holds 1.5 gallons and is pipped right in to the fuel system. Lastly I installed a small water pumping system underneath the bed (consisting of a DC motor and small pump), which has proven VERY usefull in washing the truck, hands and boots when no running water is around.

Keep in mind at first glance the truck appears completely stock, which was my goal from the beginning.

There is another thread on OBD systems.
    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=520069

There's a few of us working on this, but the needed protocol information isn't readily available on the Net (costs a few $$ to get the books).

It's a poor time of year for me to hang outside in my vehicle (I'm in Canada and it's been -20C last week) so I'm going to prep as much as I can and when we have some better weather I'll try to interface.·
However, I'm running a Jeep so the protocol probably isn't the same as the Ford protocol.· SOME of the trouble codes would be the same but the manufacturer independent codes obviously wouldn't.

Anyhow, I haven't played with any EPROM's myself, any serial ones are nice to use!· Use the SEARCH function in the forum to search through back posts.

I'm not sure where you are located, but is there any issue with the water tank freezin and breaking?· Sounds like you have a nice setup!

Never hooked up a water tank, although I had some thoughts of using a portable sprayer tank, would be handy for events such as tailgating at PSU football games, to have a nice superpowered water gun.

I just have the pump+motor assembly with some quick connect hoses I keep in the truck.

With regards to OBDII have you looked at the ELM series of chips? Depending on the protocol your car uses you'd need one of:

    http://www.elmelectronics.com/connect.html#ELM323
    http://www.elmelectronics.com/connect.html#ELM322
    http://www.elmelectronics.com/connect.html#ELM320

It might be easier to use one of these to handle the OBD protocol and the BS can then respond to the various OBD codes as required.

I've recently ordered the 322 (VPWM) and hope to see it in the next week.

I bought this as a backup to not being able to get the stamp to do what I want.· I'll use the ELM initially and then see if I can replace it with coding in the stamp.

I plan on keeping the forum up to date on my progress....
