Reading TV controller?

How do you read the signal from a TV controller?
I have the infrared detector from Radio Shack and have tried many commands in the help file but cannot get any readings.

We have a whole book on the subject: http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28139

I downloaded the book and my programming is right, but it uses a different sensor than I have. Is it possible to use another sensor?
The IR sensor I have looks just like a standard LED with two leads. I wired it like any other switch with pull-down resistors and nothing works.

You need a sensor that demodulates the 38-40 kHz modulation signal used in IR remotes.· I've not seen a two-legged device that can do this.

It sounds like you have the IR·Emitter/Detector "kit" (276-142). They probably look just like 2 LEDs, one clear/colorless (emitter)·and one clear/blue (detector).·I haven't played around with these. My hunch is that you are sponsible for supplying the pulsing mechanism; in this case voltage on one of the STAMP pins. You would probably also·be responsible for providing all timing/synchronization for this device. I would also guess that they have to be used as a pair (based on the matched·wavelengths).

Go to the parts section where the digital ICs are and look for a 276-640. This is a 38 kHz IR Receiver. If you take the mounting bracket off and straighten the 3 "legs", it looks exactly like the one on this web site. It runs $3.69. I bought one last night, I'm planning to play around with it tonight.

    Hope this helps...

Actually, you could still use the part if you build your own 40khz decoder circuit...Radio Shack has plans for such a circuit in their Engineering Mini Notebooks...Or you could Google for it.
