MAX3100 substitute???

Can someone recommend a substitute component for a MAX3100 UART?
Maxim has a 9 week lead time to get these parts and I can't locate a source in Ottawa or via Digikey.

The MAX3100 provides the buffer capacity I think I need for my BS2p24 serial comm project.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Bob

    Hi Bob,

Digikey does seem to have current stock.

    Hi Bob -

You may find this to be a real helpful search engine for finding chip availability:
http://www.findchips.com/ . Presently they show a number of resources for the MAX3100.

    Tracy and Bruce

I was certain Digikey indicated back order when I inquired last week. Maybe I am getting as old as my kid says I am.

Thanks for the FindChips link. This will be quite useful in the future.

www.phanderson.com may have some. He is a professor at a college, and uses them
    with his students.

Some limitations of the 3100 though:
    1. It *won't* do 'inverted' data -- you must have a max232 driver in there.
    2. It *only* buffers 8-bytes
    3. I think it is pretty limited where number of data bits and parity are concerned.
    4. You *must* have an external crystal on it to set the baud rate.

There is also the MAX3110, which has the inverters to RS232 levels built in. That is the chip Al described in his write-up. Unfortunately, it is harder to find than the vanilla MAX3100

I used the MAX3100 initially because one thing it has going for it is IrDA capability.

Also in its favor is a very good low power mode--The chip can sleep at low power and wake up when there is activity on the serial line. Do be sure you order the correct crystal. It is a weird frequency!

    Thanks Tracey and Al

It was indeed the MAX3110 I found to have huge lead times. The MAX3100 appears to be easily available.

I have ordered a MAX3100, a MAX3222 and a crytsal. I expect this will address my serial woes. By the time I get this issue resolved and am ready to build a permanent circuit the MAX3110 will hopefully be available.

    Thanks for the info.

    Bob

    Bob -

Digi-Key has ample stock for the MAX3110ECWI if that's helpful.

    Thanks Bruce

I saw this part but have been scared away by the SO packaging. My solderig skills are good but SO parts (and surface mount) are a significant challenge.

Are sockets available for SO parts?

    Many thanks...
