Static Protection

I'm using a stamp inside the "hull" of a plastic vehicle. I noticed that the hull was a very good static collector- like when Dremeling away at unwanted plastic, the chips all clung to the hull.
I later installed some electronics, including a BS2. Worked fine one day, but one PIC and the Stamp were DOA the next day.
Dang, must have been the static I figgered, so I ran a ground wire from the electronics to the plastic hull. No problems since. 
Does this make sense, and is there anything better to do to protect against the effects of static?
