Printing Source code (left margin option (still) broken?)

I just tried printing some of my programs for later research, and I noticed the print requestor has a field labeled "Left Margin". I could not find a reference to it in the HELP files. I'm using the Basic Stamp Editor/Development system 2.1 (dloaded about 3 days ago).

I've tried placing some values in there (.5, .75 etc) and have not been able to get printouts that give me enough room to 3-hole punch w/o poking holes in my code (there's enough in it already thankyou! smilewinkgrin.gif ) So, can someone tell me how to set this so I can print with a 3/4 or 1" left margin? TIA!

Vern

I think they must be embarassed -- testing shows the left margin box under the 'Print' dialog does nothing. I've tried 1 for 1", 10 for 10 characters, -5 for maybe 5 characters, and ' 1" ' just in case they wanted the " character. No effect on the left margin, sigh.

Our IDE programmer has been alerted. And for what it's worth, the post was made late Friday -- even I take a weekend off once in a while....

    Hi,

Unfortunately, that feature is broken in the print dialog.· We have plans to fix it in the next release but as of yet have not determined why it isn't working properly.· Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yes, really Parallax, you've been quite responsive fixing other attributes of the IDE. Any progress?

I usually descend to printing my stuff using PFE, the "Professional File Editor". It's quite old by now, but quite capable.

I've sent a note to our IDE programmer who doesn't get as much time as the rest of us to participate in the forums.

    Hi,
Unfortunately, there is an elusive,·low-level error in the underlying code·that handles the "Left Margin" setting.· The software objects that provide this feature have a planned replacement (which I am working on right now) for later this year that includes a number of enhancements and fixes, including a "Left Margin" feature that works.· Because of the nature of this error and a number of other features in progress, we won't be able to fix the left margin problem until that future release (which will be after v2.2; the version about to be released at the end of this month).
    I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks Jeff! As a software professional myself, I completely understand that there can be 'obscure' couplings between various functions. 'Obscure' that is to a user just looking at the surface functionality.

Nice to know a fix is in the works, at least.

Gurgling up from the depths.. its... the bug that wouldn't die!! <insert scream here> freaked.gif

Ok, so I just printed out 40 pages of source code and my 3-hole punched paper leaves holes in my source code. Frankly, there are enough holes in my code without this issue adding to it! lol.gif

Any update on this issue? It's been around for what, over 3 years now? cry.gif

I must be the only person left on the planet that prints source code for debugging purposes! smile.gif

Search on "PFE" -- The "Professional File Editor".

It gives you margins, line numbering, different fonts, adjustable tabs, lots and lots of nice options.
You're not the only one who prints source code. You may be the only one who does it from the Parallax IDE, though.

That looks pretty cool, but I'd prefer not to have to copy/paste into another program to print... Also, I print with syntax color turned on. The colors in the text really help me when I'm reading the code.. its just that darned left margin..

It's still more steps than you want to do, but you might try CutePDF, it installs like a regular printer, but when you print to it you're asked for a file name and location to save to (instead of it coming out on a piece of paper, it outputs a standard .pdf file).

Use Adobe Acrobat to open the resulting .pdf file and print it on your regular printer. With Acrobat you should have the ability to to scale the printout to fit your printer's normal margins.

The file to install CutePDF is called CuteWriter.exe, it's about 2MB. I probably got it from download.com or somewhere like that. If nothing else, it's very useful for making pdf files.

Wow! thats a great Idea! I already have GNU/Open Source PDFCreator installed so I can do this w/o even adding CutePDF! :) I'll try that and see if it can pull in the margins. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks RDL2004 and allanlane5, for your suggestions.

I have not solved that error, unfortunately, and got distracted from it by other issues, but I will resurrect it again as soon as possible and will post here when it is fixed.
