SXers,

Great news from Ubicom in response to customer requests.

Ubicom is going to make a new lead/contanimant-free SX chip for·those needing to comply with the European ROHS and California standards. If you make a product that is shipped to Europe, you will have no choice except to be in compliance with the ROHS regulations by July 1, 2006. The regulations·provide a long list of chemicals that will not be permitted in consumer electronics.·Many of our customers balk at lead-free manufacturing, but·most of our distributors in Europe have thrown down the gauntlet -·green package·or·they won't buy [usually by January 1, 2006].

The package would be an SX28AC/SS in a Green (environmentally non-hazardous) package; part number will be SX28AC/SSU.·This will be exactly the same as SX28AC/SS functionally and in physical dimensions, but the mold compound and die attach epoxy meet the ROHS standards (see http://www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability/pdfs/finalrohs.pdf ).· This new device will require a new (higher) soldering reflow profile, and therefore green and non-green components typically can't be put on the same board.

If you are a customer who will be buying SX28AC/SSU in the future, please contact me to review the "green" specifications/report from Ubicom to determine if the proposed part meets your needs. I will provide you with the chemical data you need to decide the appropriateness of the SX28AC/SSU. It is absolutely imperative that I obtain your input in this matter if you plan on needing a green part, because making changes are not practical once production begins.

We expect to have these in stock in November/December.

Way to go Ubicom!

    Ken,

this is good news - as you know, I base many of my current projects on the SX28AC. The RS-232/I2C Adapter, and the Triple PWM Motor Control Unit seem to be real winners (just got another quantity order), and I recently got two new project orders. IOW, I'm highly interested in the "green" SX because I hopefully will be selling these (and maybe other modules) in the next couple of years.

I think the fact that Ubicom is going to produce the "green" SX is an important indicator that they are not thinking of dropping the SX line (as suspected by some folks in another thread in this forum).
