Is there any common IC chip that can be used as buffer?

Am wondering if there is any IC chip that I can use as a buffer. Not
having a buffer is a real pain in the tuckus for my project. Any
comment would be greatly appreciated.

For a buffer, I have used the 74LC244 & 74LC245 for projects not involving
the Stamp - I really don't know why they wouldn't work with the Stamp and I
will probably try one or both at some point.

Can't find those chips at Newark or Digikey. Are you certain about
    the spelling?

Whoops!!! What I meant was 74LS244 or 74LS245, (must have had a senior

I should have said a data buffer for holding a couple
of bytes of data coming in over the serial port.

    Hi Eric:

I am not sure what you are referring to as far as a buffer. Do you mean a
Serial Buffer ?? or are you referring to some chip to drive an output and
isolate it from the stamp? If you are referring to a Serial Buffer there
is a great one made by S Parks and all the info for it's construction is in
the files section of this site. This ia a 1K PIC based serial buffer that
is really neat and works great.

    Eric,
Yes, I'm looking for a serial buffer. I looked under the files
section and saw a text file for a serial buffer saying to refer to
Peter H. Anderson's web site for purchasing. When I went to the web
site I did not find the pic in question. Any help you can offer?

I'm guessing that you mean "HC" or "LS" rather than "LC" in the above part
numbers. Of the two, the HC parts are better for just about all
situations. Much lower current consumption and about double the output
drive capability than the "LS" parts.

It has been quite a while since I built anything of consequence so it is
good to hear about the "HC" line. I have seen the "HC" part numbers but I
guess I was just stuck in a rut. I appreciate your input...

The serial buffer was designed by S Parkis and was put in the file system
some time last year. Check further if you cannot find it then let me know
it is really neat. Steve is a regular on this site and always has some great
    info.

There is also the MAX3100, which is a UART and 8 byte fifo buffer
that connects to the Stamp via SERIN/SEROUT. App note and links at
    this URL: <http://www.emesystems.com/BS2IrDA.htm>. The URL
emphasizes the IrDA capability of the chip, but it is just as capable
    of straight RS232.

There is also the MAX3100, which is a UART and 8 byte fifo buffer that
connects to the Stamp via SERIN/SEROUT. App note and links at this URL:
<http://www.emesystems.com/BS2IrDA.htm>. The URL emphasizes the IrDA
capability of the chip, but it is just as capable of straight RS232.

Thanks for all your help. I think I'll be trying the
maxim chip. I talked to the owner of protean-logic and
the rs232 serial buffer chips are still in the beta
    stage.
