Sensirion SHT1x maximum cable type and length and CRC

Anyone have any information on the maximum cable length for the SHT1x
module? I need about 20 feet of cable for the sensor.

Also I am having a hard time understanding the CRC checksum that is
described by Sensirion.

    I used it with a 40 foot length of 8 conductor cable, using 4 of the 8
    conductors. It worked quite well until I got a nearby
    lightning strike. Probably a good idea to put clamping zener diodes to
    ground on the V+, Clock, and Data leads. The
    secondary voltage from the lightning strike also wiped out two ports of my
    BS2.
