Hi Steve,
I read over some of the responses and the labor for an automatic cat
door seems a little excessive as well as costs. There is a gentleman
who made a project with the RFID tags or some such and did a great
web page on it. data logging and everything....
anyway, back to your low tech project.
if you made a feeding station with 3 doors, maybe three feeding
stalls.... each would have a color (or gray scale) sensor to detect
each cat and only open the door to the bowl if the proper cat was in
front of it.
A simple solenoid (or small motor..) on a door and a sensor for each
one as well.
This would also train the cats that each has it's own bowl in the
event you need speical food for another one next year.....

There are two cat doors that I remember reading about.
One the inventor used tags on the cat collars and the door opened for
his cats but not the neighbors. I seem to recal he had 3 cats and
used some aluminum frame to open the door. I also seem to recall he
went professional ??? or at least more exculsive.
The other was some research on recognition of profiles.
