Well time for another project, the wife just came in screamin, that
rat ran right in front of me you need to find some way to kill that
thing is that all you can do is sit back in your office and work on
that stuff(translated to normal speak can we all say together BASIC
STAMP).She was out in the barn where there is every rat trap that
man has made and this rat will not go on,in or around. So I will
attack this like every other Basic Stamp project fun fun fun.Now to
keep Jon happy and out of the possible liability of me discussing
this here lets just say it involves a BS2 ,infared emitter and
detector a 12 volt car door lock solinoid, some steel pipe big and
    small and a 410 shotgun shell,BOOM.

Ever watch myth busters going to start my own episode, just like they
    do over build it.

    Just had to share,

    Stan

P.S we live out of the city limits lots of free space, can shoot in
    the back yard.

Use the stamp to run a CMUCam and put a video transmitter on it.
Then strap it to the CAT you'll buy as it's the only REAL way to get rid of
    rodents outside of poisons!

Stan, saw your post and was in tears laughing! My wife is sitting
next to me. She says that she loves the way us "guys" portray our
wives in these posts! ;-) Anyway, we ran into a similar problem a
couple of summers ago, and I was inspired to build my own BS2-Based
project for dealing with a Mouse problem. You can see this device
    at the link below...

    http://www.lightlink.com/dream/chris/mousetrap.htm

Interestingly enough, it uses the same principles as your idea for
detecting the rodent, however, my wife is a tree-hugger and
therefore would not allow me to kill even a rodent, therefore our
Mouse Trap does not involve a gun (Although someone e-mailed me a
suggestion involving an inverter and electrodes).

Watch out about booby traps. Such things are patently illegal in most
    states.

I have built several versions of a mouse-a-pult. The wife came downstairs
in fear when I sent the girl child up stairs to ask for some peanut butter
    and vasoline for my trap<G>.
