Linux to BS2 serial communication

Ive been trying various ways in linux to send data to the basic stamp through teh serial
port. I keep running into dead ends. Has anyone done this before. I just want a small script
that will send a number to the basic stamp through the serial port. Does anyone have any
basic stamp code, along with like a perl script that they have made that i can look at? Also
are there any settings i should be tweaking in linux to make the serial port work right? Any
help would be appriciated. Ive been struggleing with this for a while now.

http://www.al-williams.com/gp3.htm and download the Linux library example
from there. This is a board that allows you to control things from the
serial port, so the function isn't that interesting to you. However, the
core library uses a wrapper around the serial I/O code for portability and
gp3linux.c has just the subroutines for Linux to open the port, send data,
etc.
Hope that helps.
