lcd cable distance

hello all ,
i've had a look around and i cant seem to find any data as to
maximum cable length when connecting a bs2 and bs2p40 to a serial
backpack driven lcd. the firm who supplied me it (milford
instruments ) cant answer the question. i believe the part may have
originated at seetron.
now i know from viewing the stamp schematic that its not true rs232
as the swing seems to be 0 to 5 v so this has got to effect the max
cable run but to what extent?
i dont want to have to convert to true rs 232 if at all possible but
if thats the answer then so be it.
i know i can slow the baud rate down from 9600 if i have to to
extend the distance
i would like to hear from anyone whos has any experience of remote
displays. i'm only looking to extend to around 7 feet or so.

twisted wire (ground and signal). I've not gone that far, but recently
ran about four feet with a piece of standard telephone cable without any
problems.
