XY Plotter

We have Basic Stamp2 and very basic control of an XY plotter via two
12v stepper motors each hooked up to a SAA 1027 IC requiring a
single count input. Really struggling with the programming the
stamp. Can anyone help by recommending an idiot proof book or some
routines we might study. Would like the plotter to, eventually, to
draw simple alphabet characters!!
