AC motor speed control with a basic stamp?

Has anyone out there attempted to make an AC motor speed controller
(3/4 HP) with a basic stamp as the controller? A friend of mine
wants a speed control for his bandsaw & a basic stamp project seems
to be a great way to do it. Any ideas or suggestions? Has anyone
tried this before?
Thanks!

Watch E-Bay for variable speed drives and buy one.
many can connect to a 220 AC line and drive a 3 phase motor. These
would offer the robust drive with the simplicity of wire cutters and
a screw driver.

This solution might be ok, but something that you might want to consider
especially with a band-saw, is that under load conditions, your speed may
wildly vary at lower speed settings. In your search for a speed controller
you may want to think about looking for a speed controller which at least
has an option for using a feedback tachometer.
Another thing to consider that might make your search easier, is that more
than likely if the band-saw motor has brushes, it will also operate on DC.
To easily test this, temporarily connect 12VDC to the band-saw outlet-plug
(...Should turn slowly). I have done this with my table-saw and the battery
pack from my cordless drill and even with a fresh 9V battery so I know this
works. I mention DC, because it is much easier to control and with a few
MOSFETS in parallel, the STAMP becomes a relatively easy candidate for the
task.
