Basic Stamp Editor for other PIC''s?

It depends on your price point.

If you can afford to sell the widget with
the overhead of the BS2 in it, then go for it.

Otherwise, my cutoff point would be between
10 and 100 items. You can do the math. I have
two lines. One starts at zero, and rises at
$50.00 per item. The other starts at $300,
and rises at $5.00 per item. (I am assuming
all other costs are fixed -- which hopefully
is good enough for a first approximation.)
At some number of items, the lines cross.
Beyond that point, you are making more money
if you don't use the Stamp.

Oh, and note the BS2 platform IS available in
an 'OEM' configuration, AND Parallax does have
volume discounts.

Note also the 'roll-your-own' does assume for
each item you'll need a PIC, a resonator,
a voltage regulator, and a MAX232. $5.00 may
be too low for this -- but it's in the ballpark.
