74hc595 and darlington array help?

I have two questions...
first, i just got some 74hc595 serial/parallels and am having
trouble connecting them and getting them to work.
a. do i need to connect all 8 LED's for it to work?
b. i have a schematic but am not that good at reading it, could
someone help me with that? the schematic i have is from stampworks
experiment #23. if anyone would even be so willing as to take a pic
of the wiring and send it to me...but any help would work.
c. what type of code would i need to write to control each output
seperately off the 74hc595, if that's possible.

now for the darling array, its a uln2803a
a. how do i wire that as well and what kind of code should i use to
control the voltage on the output?

thanks for the help, pics from the extra generous can be sent to
markmcleod50@h...

    hi ,

    simplify the schematic.

connect the 595 per the E#23 to understand the code.

    then add the uln2803.

much easier when you are only working with one new chip.

    dave,
i should have been more specific, i am not trying to use them
together, but cannot even figure out how to use them seperately.
yeah. i guess it's trouble reading schematics. can you suggest any
circuits for dummies books or offer any more advice. thanks. mark

    Simplify.

If you are having trouble with stuff, pick one and get that figured
    out.

The darlington is easy as you can wire it on a breadboard and use
wires to act like switches. since it is a dumb device that
    should be no problem.

The 595 is more complicated as it requires more than passing knoledge
of the Stamp, but the StampWorks project should hold your hand thru
    it.

But, pick one and change the subject line to reflect that topic and
    ask away.

If all you need it help with connections, make sure you have a copy
of the data sheet and study the schematics and pin connections.
Don't bother reading the specs and tables. just look at how the
    connectors go.
