ds2450 power pull down on bs2p40 board

Hi guys,

I just picked up my bs2p40 demo board and have been playing a little bit
with some temp sensors.
So, I know the stamp works well enough.
Now, I picked up a ds2450 1-wire quad A-D converter.

My mistake was getting the 8pin surface mount (SOIC?) rather than the DIP
package.
So anyhow, I solder tacked some wire wrap to each pin and then to a dip
socket and then put that in the demo board.

When I apply power to the ds2450 I can see the power LED dim. So I tossed
on a DMM and can see the power go from 5V down to 2.3! the longer I hold it
there the higher it gets...BUT, I can smell heat (you know the smell I mean)
coming from the board ( regulator? ).

The other items I have on my board that are powered are an LM35 (this is
what I want to use the ds2450 with) and a ds1620 digital therm.
seem only when I connect power to the A-D converter that the power
foldsback. Could my regulator be bad? I think so! Just wanna get some
advice.

My next question after this is sorted will be....how the heck do I use the
ds2450!! lol

That is the blue smoke trying to get out. If you let it get out, the
device won't
work anymore!!<VBG>

Hello,

If you disconnect the DS2450, are the other components working properly?
Does the power LED still go dim? If not, then more than likely you have
a short surrounding the DS2450 chip in your circuit. If you have any
more questions please feel free to e-mail us.

Hi Dave,

as soon as I disconnect the ds2450, the voltage (and LED) all go back to a
normal state.
I'm unsure about the DS2450....popped something on the inside maybe....which
is loading down the regulator.

Hi Steve,

It sounds like the chip is damaged, that could have been caused by a
short in the soldering or a mis-connected circuit or you received a bad
chip. We have the Philips PCF8591 4-channel A2D plus 1-channel D2A,
it's not a Dallas one-wire product, and it's a Philips IC2 product. If
you like I can send you the information regarding the wiring diagram and
sample code?

Well, from what I gathered with this 1-wire device. when you do a reset it
answer back with a PRESENCE code!! lol couldn't find out what this was.
And what I got back was FF....which doesn't tell me anything more than that
the pull-up resistor is connected to 5volts!

I might have put too much heat to the chip while soldering too! those dam
little wire wrap wires break easy and I had to do it a couple times....I did
this a couple minutes before leaving for the day...I'll do some continuity
checks tomorrow....but I wasn't sure if the bs2p40 is so power hungry that
you couldn't power a bunch of other devices off of it's on board regulator.
But still this A-D doesn't use much for power if it's not converting!

Perhaps you connected the DS2450 incorrectly?.... Once you get things
working electrically, you'll find demo code for the DS2450 in our Plus
Pack documentation.

Subject: [basicstamps] ds2450 power pull down on bs2p40 board

Hi guys,

I just picked up my bs2p40 demo board and have been playing a little bit
with some temp sensors. So, I know the stamp works well enough. Now, I
picked up a ds2450 1-wire quad A-D converter.

My mistake was getting the 8pin surface mount (SOIC?) rather than the
DIP package. So anyhow, I solder tacked some wire wrap to each pin and
then to a dip socket and then put that in the demo board.

When I apply power to the ds2450 I can see the power LED dim. So I
tossed on a DMM and can see the power go from 5V down to 2.3! the
longer I hold it there the higher it gets...BUT, I can smell heat (you
know the smell I mean) coming from the board ( regulator? ).

The other items I have on my board that are powered are an LM35 (this is
what I want to use the ds2450 with) and a ds1620 digital therm. seem
only when I connect power to the A-D converter that the power foldsback.
Could my regulator be bad? I think so! Just wanna get some advice.

My next question after this is sorted will be....how the heck do I use
the ds2450!! lol

Whoops ... my mistake, we have code for the DS2405 (switch).

Perhaps you connected the DS2450 incorrectly?.... Once you get things
working electrically, you'll find demo code for the DS2450 in our Plus
Pack documentation.

What I got off the net showed me pin1 is Vcc and pin3 is Gnd.

I just checked the datasheet and yes...vcc is pin1 and gnd is pin4. data
spits out of pin3.

I'm thinking I applied too much heat and popped one of the interconnect
wires on the inside....
