No basic stamps found...

I've just bought a BS2sx and a basic stamp 2 carrier board. I didn't
own a serial cable so I made a straight-through cable on my own. Pins
2,3,4,5 (also 6 to 7) are connected and pin 2 and pin 3 are swapped,
following the picture at http://photos.groups.yahoo.
com/group/basicstamps/vwp?.dir=/serial+cable+diagrams&.src=gr&.
dnm=BS_2_RS-232_wiring_diagram.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.
groups.yahoo.com/group/basicstamps/lst%3f%26.dir=/serial%2bcable%
2bdiagrams%26.src=gr%26.view=t

I repeatedly get an error message (using: Stampw_v2.1_Beta_1.exe) "No
basic stamps found". When trying to identify basic stamp, I get
Loopback: yes and Echo: yes but device type is empty. FIFO is disabled
from COM1 and all programs using the port are shut down. I assume baud
rate (using: 9600) and all other setting are irrelevent. Power source
is a 9V battery connected to VIN and VSS.

I'm not familiar with the picture you mention, but uncross pins 2 and 3! The
Basic Stamp wants a straight through cable to an ordinary PC.

By the way, it sounds like I need to add some more cable info to
http://www.wd5gnr.com/stampfaq.htm -- the unofficial Stamp FAQ. There's been
a lot of cable questions lately!

    Hi again,

I'm really looking forward to your faq about this topic (hoping for
some nice pictures with all the pins connected to a serial cable).

I first tested with a "straight-through" cable and that didn't work.
Then I found this Yahoo-group and found a picture which differed
from the picture on the manual, meaning pins 2 and 3 were swapped.
It's really frustrating to own a basic stamp and not be able to
    program it...:/

With respect, buy a pre-made (straight through -- non null modem) cable.
You'll spend far more time and energy chasing connection problems than a
    serial cable will cost.

Neither of the photos in that folder were provided by Parallax and I am
requesting that the group admistrator remove them from the archive to
prevent future issues. Please, if you insist on rolling-your-own cables
and boards, please use official Parallax sources (that is, from our
    documentation or web site).

    Hey Mike
I'm having the exact same problem as you. I just bought the BS2SX-IC
from ebay and I have plugged it up exactly the same as you and still
i get exactly the same results as you. yes to loopback, and echo but
no device is found. Anyways if you do figure out how to get it
working, can u please e-mail me how you did it at
    one_ied_freakazoid@h...?

    Thanks very much!

    Hello,

Have you been able to program your stamps yet? If not, here are a few
    things to check:

    1. If you have a PDA or Palm Pilot make sure to turn off the "Hot Sync"
    button.

    2. If you have a voltage meter, I want you to take some voltage
measurements with the cable and power supply connected to the stamp.
    You should see:

    -5v across Sout and Vss
    -10v across Sin and Vss
    5v across Res and Vss
    5v across Vdd and Vss

If you have any more questions please feel free to e-mail us.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Hi there,

No I still havn't gotten it to work and I don't have a PDA and I've
taken the measurments with my multimeter and those are the exact
readings I get. I'm thinking that it's the chip istelf, so I bought
a new BS2-IC I guess we'll find out soon. Anyways thanks for the
trouble i've put you through. And I'll keep you posted on the
results of my entire Basic stamp experience when I recieve the new
    stamp.
    Thanks very much!
