Pregramming Board Trouble

I am still having a lot of trouble being able to program myBasic
Stamp 2SX. I bought it supposedly new off Ebay and it should work.
But it didn't come with a programming board so budget being an
issue, I decided to make my own. On page 27 of the basic stamp
manual v2.0 it sais that all you have to do is connect a wire from
pins 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the stamp to pins 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the
serial port. Also pins 6 and 7 on the serial port have to be
connected to each other. Then the stamp has to be powered with a
nine volt battery to pins 23 and 24. I tried all of that and still
no luck. For some reason, when i try to identify the stamp with the
windows editor v2.1 beta 1 it can't figure out what type of device
it is, but it does figure out that there is a loopback and echo. Now
i'm wonderijng, can this mean that my stamp is broken in some way,
or is there something else that i'm missing. Has anyone else had
this problem? I've gone over all of the connections a million times
and can't seem to find anything wrong. Please Help! I am in
desperate need of some help.

Hello,
If you have a voltmeter check the following lines.
Sout/Pin 1 should = -5vdc ~
Sin/Pin 2 should = -11vdc to -9vdc ~
Atn line pin 3 should = -11vdc to -9vdc ~ note:(only if you are not
using the capacitive coupling)

Hello,
Well all of your connections seem fine; here are a couple of
general solutions that we throw out first.

If you are using a PC:
(1) Make sure you have the most resent version of the software for the
product you are using from our web site at www.parallax.com

(2) Some systems have their FIFO on for the serial ports. Make sure this
is turned off.

(3) Some new systems (Dells, Gateways) will allow you to program the
stamp but will not let it run with the programming cable attached or
only run when a debug command is in the code. This is a know problem and
is being worked on. In the mean time the only fix is unplugging the
cable or putting a debug command in the code.

(4) We have found some new PC's allow you to set the state of a Parallel
and/or Com port. You will want to make sure that these settings are to
ON and not auto or off.

(6) If you have made your own board please check schematic to insure
proper wiring.

(7) If you have a Palm pilot or WinCE device software on you system make
sure that the software is disabled. Unplugging the unit will not stop
the software from taking or the port.

(8) Make sure you are using the correct software for the operating
system you are running. Please check www.parallax.com for the most
recent software available. Note: The Dos software will only work in true
DOS 3.0 and higher and the Windows software is compatible with 95, 98,
NT, XP, ME and 2K.

(9) If you are using a system with out a dbp9 serial port you will want
to use the http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA19HS/. These are the
only to that we have go to work with the timing of the stamp during
programming.

pin 6 and 7 must be connected on the stamp side not the serial port side.
Connecting 6 to 7 on the serial port would only work if you carried a wire
from each pin to the PC.

I don't think my last reply made any sense after I read it again. (its too
early), so let me try again. On the stamp side, 9pin D connector, connect
pin 6 to 7. Connect pin 2 to pin 1 on the stamp. Connect pin 3 to pin 2 of
the stamp. On the cable, carry pins 2,3,6,7 male D connector 9 pin to the
PC pins 2,3,6,7 9 pin female 9 pin D connector. Apply power + and -to the
stamp and everything should work.

I also forgot to mention pin 4 of the connector to pin 3 of the stamp and
pin 5 of the connector to pin 4 of the stamp and carry wires from pins 4 and
5 of the connector to 4 and 5 of the PC serial port. (I need more coffee)

You left out DB-9 pin 5, which is ground.
RS232 is not going to work very well
without a common ground.

Hello,
We have found that the FIFO buffer will cause the stamps not to
be found on some systems. To disable the FIFOs you will need to go to
your com ports under system and click on port settings and advanced
there you should see a check mark in the FIFO box. Remove it and try the
editor again. If this doesn't work try your setup on another system. If
this also fails then the stamp you have may be damaged.
