Basic Stamp Computer Connection

Hi all,
I'm a newbie so please be nice!
I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to be able to connect the
basic stamp 2sx up to the computer without a programming board of
any type. I read somewhere that you can just hook up 4 wires from
the TX, RX, DTR, and GND connections from the stamp to the pins 2,
3, 4, and 5 on the DB9 Serial port on the computer. I tried that and
no luck. I am using the Windows editor V2.1 Beta 1. The editor can
loopback and echo when i press identify, but for some reason, it
can't find the device type correctly. I also found somewhere that
you could connect the pins 2 and 3 directly to the TX and RX pins
and then connect Pin 4 and 5 with a 0.1uf 100V capacitor to the DTR
and GND pins. But that hasn't worked out for me either.
Can anyone help?
I would really appreciate it.
Thx in advance,
Jason Chechik

Chip
DB-9
Pin1 is Serial Out (to PC-RX)
Pin2 is Serial In (to PC-TX)
Pin3 is ATN (to PC-DTR)
Pin4 is VSS (GND) (to DB-9 Pin 5).
Pin 24 is VIN, to +9V
Pin 23 is VSS, to GND
and DB-9 Pin 6 and 7 connected together.
You also have to install a small loop-back
wire between pin 6 and 7 of the DB-9 connector.
AND, you need like a 9-volt battery, connected
with the + terminal on 'VIN', and the - terminal
on VSS.

you're doing with electronics (building circuits) then there are
schematics available on our web site that will give you what you need.
If you're new to electronics you will save yourself a lot of aggrivation
(and a possible dead BASIC Stamp) by purchasing a pre-built programming
board. If budget is an issue, check our e-Bay auctions.

show the connections between the DB-9 and the BASIC Stamp.

The schematic is for the BS2p Demo Board, but the programming
connections are the same for all BS2-family modules.

still no luck. for some reason when i press identify in the windows
editor, it sais that on com1 the device type is blank, the loopback
is yes and the echo is yes. It just wont find the stamp chip. can
anyone help?

Yes I do have a nine volt battery connected to pins 23 and 24 on the
stamp to power it.
