A diferent transducer - water flow measurement

Hi Spence,

Since we all know you like all caps. we'll not go there (again)

That looks good and will be a neat device for many of us. One thing
that most of us look for is cheap. the larger meters start to cost a
pretty penny.

A very workable solution is to take your 2" or 8" pipe and add an
orifice plate. Just a plate with a slightly smaller diameter than
the pipe size.

This creates a pressure drop that should not be too great, but will
offer a benefit to this meter.

Then you can place the smallest meter so it is connected on both
sides of the plate and the meter will show a representative flow of
water.

another approach is to put a sensor in the main pipe that faces the
direction of flow and one that faces opposite the direction of flow.
That way, the meter would see a representative flow.

But, this is neat as I am working on a project for a greenhouse data
logger and monitoring water quantity would be a neat additional
point !

The home-brew version of this would be a Tee in the pipe and a paddle
wheel in the Tee so that the axis was hidden from the main flow up,
inside of the tee. Then on the paddle wheel one wheel (or more)
would have a metal bit so a sensor could count pulses each time that
part passed the sensor. The sensor could be on the cap on the tee.

If anyone is interested, I can work up a sketch.
