I'm need a way to power a Boe-Bot, preferably rechargeable batteries. I
need 160 ma when Boe is not moving, and over 400 ma when Boe is moving at
full speed. What should I get?

How long you intend to run your robot between charges?

'How long you intend to run your robot between charges?'
    _____

I'd like to run the Boe-Bot for a couple of hours between charges. Right
now, if I put a set of four AA Duracell batteries in the Boe-Bot, they only
    last 40 minutes.

I was in a model aircraft store yesterday, and the guy at the store showed
me some small powerful batteries. They looked small enought to fit in the
Boe-Bot battery space. The price tag on the batteries was $70, and the guy
said the batteries need a special charger, which was around $80. I asked the
guy if these batteries would work in a Boe-Bot robot, but he never heard of
a Boe-Bot. The guy only knew that these batteries worked really well in R/C
    helicopters.

Do you think these batteries would fit in a Boe-Bot, and do you think they
would they work in a Boe-Bot for several hours between charges?

This will depend on the voltage that the batteries put out. The
connector isn't an issue as you can cut the one off the pack that
came with the Boe-Bot and solder it inline with the current one
that's on the pack. (You want to leave this so you can charge the
battery). Be absolutely sure that the voltage is correct and you
solder the + to + and the – to the -….(obviously)

Thanks for the reply. I'll go out to the hobby store today and find out what
battery voltages are available, and I'll take Boe_Bot with me and see if
there is a battery that fits into the available space under the Boe-Bot's
    chassis.

I've got UPS delivery coming today with another range finder, and a servo to
rotate it, so my milliamp current needs are going up again.

I have the four AA cells mounted underneath the chassis and another 4 AA
cells mounted on top of the chassis underneath the BOE, both wired in parallel.

There was no way to use screw for the second batt pack so I mounted it with
1/2' wide mounting tape from Walgreen's. Very strong stuff - works great. I
    now
have a total batt capacity of over 2200 mah.

If you are into hacking, considder an old cell phone battery.

you would have the battery and charger and the contacts are often
easy to connect, or add a plug to.

If you ask around you may be surprised how many cell phones you can
get from friends and family. My in-laws get new phones every year
    when they re-new their contract.

unfortunatly, most batteries are not standardized, but the lithium
Ion batteries are powerfull and if you find one you like, check e-bay
for replacements (need the cell phone model) and you should be able
to get additional batteries pretty cheap as well as a very cheap
charger as well as a neat antenna range booster that should extend
your cell phone range by a few hundred million angstroms.

    Hello Sid and Dave,

I like your ideas for adding power/batteries to the Boe-Bot. I went to a
cell phone store yesterday, and the cell phone batteries that Dave suggested
looked like just the right size.

I ordered a Boe-Bot Tank Tread Kit, and a Parallax AA Battery Holder, so
after I receive those items I'll decide on what kind of batteries and where
to put them. The Tank Tread Kit is back ordered to May 15, so that buys me a
    month's time.

Until then, I'll keep the Boe-Bot on an extension cord from a Radio Shack
    ac/dc adapter.

    Steve
