Any ideas on how or what I could use basic stamps in car applications or for
storm chasing? I know its kind of a weird question to ask.

One car application I built for a friend was a speed warning device. The
stamp interfaced into the vehicle speed sensor would sense vehicle speed and
    sound
three different distinct buzzers when vehicle speed exceeded 35, 50, and 65
    mph.

    Hi All,
I've been thinking about doing something like this with a speech announcing
feature - probably with the SP0256AL. Has anyone out there tried such a
thing? This would be real handy when on unfamiliar turf and the sun is in
your eyes, (can't see the speedometer while driving through a congested
    hamlet with hyper-active cops.)

That's interesting. I build a digital speedo an info display using a
GPS unit (project appeared in Nuts & Volts). I'd love to know how to
tap into the signals from my car (Mitsubishi Motero Sport). Any info
    you can point to?

If you scan back through the Nuts & Volts articles on our web site
you'll find an article I did about five years ago using the SP0-256-AL2.
It was fun ... but in truth you'll get better results (audio quality)
and easier connections using the new SpeakJet chip (www.speakjet.com).
I've played with it a bit, it's pretty easy to use.

    Jon,

Your Montero Sport will have a vehicle speed sensor mounted on the outside of
the transmission case (on top) in the vicinity of the final drive.

If there are onle two wires to the sensor, it is a variable reluctance sensor
that produces an AC voltage, obviously you would need to condition this
    signal.

If there are three wires at the sensor, you are almost home free.......for
the three wire sensor, if you disconnect the sensor connecter and turn the key
on (engine off) one wire will have 12 volts (suppply) one will have zero volts
(ground) and the other will likely have 5 volts. All readings referenced to
    chassis ground.

The 5 volt wire comes from the vehicle engine computer. It is a "pull up."
The vehicle speed sensor (vss) is simply an open collector arrangement and
usually produces in the neighborhood of 4 pulses per rev of the wheel, but this
    varies from manf to manf.....

What I typically do is backprobe the 5 volt wire and have somebody push the
car (both drive wheels need to turn) and count how many pulses per one rev of
    the wheel.

Mark the ground or wheel and do the push again to get the tire
    circumference....

Now you have a number of pulses per distance....

You obviously can take it from there (writing the program).
