Then, you are in luck. The BS2 is the simplist, easiest
to use microcontroller. It has a PIC microcontroller
as its main processor, but all the difficult interfacing
stuff has been done for you.

I recommend you get the PBasic .PDF manual off the
Parallax website (see downloads), and look up:
1. The button command.
2. The HIGH and LOW commands.
3. The SERIN and SEROUT commands.

The LCD interface -- you'll need a 44780 data sheet
for that, since most LCD controllers are compatible
with the Hitachi 44780 LCD controller chip.

With the BS2 and the Parallax BoardOfEducation (BOE),
you can do all of this very easily.
