Boe-Bot CMUcam

Hi Everyone,
I would like to know if anyone has experienced using the CMU camera by
Parallax. I am interested in using it for educational purposes (student
problem solving) but wonder what the quality of pictures are as well as
where it has been used before. Is it possible to use the parallax
remote wireless receiver and transmitter to send pictures back to the
computer? If anyone can help with real life applications I would
appreciate a reply.
Thanks Mark

    Mark,

I have used the CMUCam on search and rescue robots and am currently
using it to develop genetic neural network applications for object
recognition. It sounds like you are interested in doing image
processing or having your students analyze video feeds from the
camera. While the CMUCam does have a scanned video option, which has
supposedly been expanded on the new CMUCam2 (which has not been made
available through Parallax yet), raw video is not really its forte.
The resolution isn't great and the camera is most useful for its video
processing capabilities. Because it can do things like blob detection
and centroid indication, it is very useful for detecting and tracking
objects that you aren't really concerned about seeing an image for.
Also, transmiting the image via RF modem would get frustratingly slow
for a robotic application. If you really only want a video feed,
you'd probably be better off with a wireless video camera like the X10
    camera.

    Hello,
We're currently performing a technical review of the CMUCam2 and hope to
    carry it soon!
I'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

    Hello,
I apologize for the delay in information on this topic. To clarify, we
are reviewing a version of the CMUcam which is intended to be a Boe-Bot
robot friendly version (and it's not the CMUcam 2).

To order the CMUcam 2 or to obtain more information pleas visit the
Seattle Robotics web site at http://www.seattlerobotics.com/
