Hello again all,
Thanks to Jon and Al Williams( related?) By the way Al, your
book 'Microcontroller projects using the Basic Stamp ' is great!
I know I asked this, but I really want a yes or no to this. The
BS2sx is really fast, thats for sure, so is it normal, in otherwords
in your experience should the PIC chip run a little warm-not hot but
warm. It's just a little concerning when ANY electronics create
heat. By the way, there are no loads on the chip, i.e no outputs and
I'm powering the BS2sx with an external 7805 feeding Vdd and Vss
with 5.02vdc. The chip runs great even when I do drive a small load,
for example my serial backpack, just a bit warm. So, please tell me
all is well with my Stamp so I can carry on without worry !!!
thanks guys.....John King

-- we live in the great state of Texas
-- we love BASIC Stamps
-- our last name is Williams
... but alas, we are not related (that either is aware of) and have only
actually met by phone.
The BS2sx has a very fast clock rate and hence, runs a bit warm (the
faster a device is clocked, the more current it will consume and some of
this is converted to heat). This is not a problem.

Jon and I are not related so far as we know. Yes, the BS2SX does run a
little warm. If it is working fine, I wouldn't worry about it.
All CMOS circuits are conceptually like two switches. One switch is
connected to 5V and the other is connected to ground. If the circuit isn't
changing state, the chip draws practically no power. If both switches were
turned on at once, you'd draw loads of power, but that shouldn't happen.
Except... When the switches change state there will be a brief period when
both are sort of on at once and you get a huge current spike.
This explains several things. One, it explains why CMOS draws more current
at high frequencies. It also explains why you can put CMOS chips "to sleep"
where they draw virtually nothing. Finally, it explains (some of) why you
get odd results if you don't have some capacitance on the Vdd line.

Al Williams
